How to install Sopcast on Ubuntu
This guide will help you install and configure Sopcast on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron to watch high-level soccer matches, UEFA and Champions League in web streaming.
Before starting, make sure that all of the universe and multiverse repositories are active. Then type from terminal:
sudo apt-get install build-essential qt3-dev-tools libqt3-mt-dev libasound2-dev
The software you're going to install may be saved in any path.
To better organize your application, though, I suggest to create an “Apps” directory in your Home, inside which you shall save all of your user applications. In this case you will need to create a sopcast subdirectory with the following command:
cd ~ mkdir -p Apps/sopcast/ cd Apps/sopcast/
Installation of Sopcast
SopCast is a multi-platform software which allows users to share streaming audio and video through p2p protocol. A fast and simple way to watch videos and listen to radio on the Internet other than sharing our own programs for free.
Passages to follow for a correct installation are listed below.
Download of the most recent software release:
wget http://cnc1.sopcast.cn/download/sp-auth.tgz
Extract the file content:
tar xzf sp-auth.tgz
Move the executable sopcast file to the directory specified by the graphical user interface (GUI) and rename it:
sudo cp sp-auth/sp-sc-auth /usr/bin/sp-sc
At this point you would be theoretically ready to share and receive your favourite audio/video streams from command line, but if you continue to read this guide you will find out that there's another simpler method to do that.
Installation of QSopcast
QSopcast is a graphical frontend for Sopcast, based on Nokia QT libraries.
The installation process we're going to analyze has no particular requirements.
Download of the most recent release of the software (version 0.3.5 at the moment)
wget http://qsopcast.googlecode.com/files/qsopcast-0.3.5.tar.bz2
Extract the content of the file you just downloaded:
tar -jxvf qsopcast-0.3.5.tar.bz2
Go to folder “src” and compile the program:
cd qsopcast-0.3.5/src/ qmake-qt3 && make && sudo make install
How to create the start button
From the top menu, select the option:
System > Preferences > Main Menu
...then "Internet" and "New Item".
Insert the following values in the respective fields:
Name: QSopCast
Command: qsopcast
Comment: Sopcast TV Player
From this moment on you can start Qsopcast directly from the main menu.
How to configure QSopcast
Once the GUI has been started, choose the voice Settings from menu Settings (or press key combination "CTRL+F").
Make sure that the first 3 reader settings are setted on vlc and that the channel URL is setted on http://www.sopcast.com/gchlxml.
Now you can finally watch Sop transmissions by selecting a channel, launching it and then starting the player when streaming reaches approximately 100%.
How to open sop:// URL's from Firefox
Thanks to the most advanced Firefox configuration options, you can automatically open Qsopcast clicking on sop:// links present on web (i.e on MyP2P.eu).
How to? It's very simple:
Open a window in Firefox and type in the address "about:config".
Click on the alert button at the center of the page.
Right-click and select “New” and then "String".
Insert "network.protocol-handler.app.sop" in the field name" and "qsopcast" as value.
Once all the above configuration is complete, you'll have perfectly integrated your favorite browser with Sopcast and you'll be ready to watch all of the available sop programs for free!
Notes
