How to install SmartSVN on Ubuntu

A simple guide for installing the SubVersion SmartSVN client on a Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron system.

SmartSVN is one of the most powerful SVN clients available for Ubuntu/Linux.
It has advanced features and it's very easy to use, halving the time for managing a repository SubVersion.
It's a cross-platform project, so SmartSVN requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4.1 or higher. You can download the specific package for your platform, directly from the SUN website.

Downloading SmartSVN

  1. Download the latest version of the "Generic (Linux, Unix, OS / 2)" from the SmartSVN download page.

  2. Extract the archive data (right click on it and select Extract here).

  3. Move the directory just created in your favourite path. It's better to create in your Home directory another directory named Apps, to move the directory SmartSVN in.

Add SmartSVN to the Applications menu

Our goal is to make SmartSVN easily bootable from the following location:

Applications > Programming > SmartSVN

To get there you must complete the steps described below, remembering to replace SmartSVN_path with the location where you have decided to install the software.

  1. Right click on Applications menu.

  2. Click on Edit menu.

  3. Check that Programming category is active in the right column, through the sign next to it. If It's not, activate it.

  4. Select the Programming category from the left column.

  5. Click on the New Item button: the Creation launcher window should appear:

    • Type: Application

    • Name: SmartSVN

    • Command: SmartSVN_path/bin/smartsvn.sh

    • Click on the icon in order to choose the icon link.

    • Click on Sfoglia and select the SmartSVN_path/bin/ folder.

    • Among the 4 available icons, choose smartsvn-32×32.png and click OK.

    • Click on OK again.

  6. Click on Close.

Notes
