Extract RAR archives in Ubuntu 8.04

The instructions needed to open and decompress archives in RAR format on Ubuntu Hardy Heron and earlier.

The default installation of Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy Heron, doesn't support the rar archives for copyright reasons (RAR support is not freely available).
This problem is highlighted when, trying to open a rar file, you receive an error message like this:

Cannot open «filename.rar»

Archive type not supported.

To resolve this small inconvenience, just open the terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install unrar

Once entered the password and confirmed the installation of the package when prompted, you can decompress ".rar" files, by right click on the file and choosing Extract Here from the menu.

Notes

For those wishing to maintain its distribution consistent with the Ubuntu philosophy: within the repository of Ubuntu 8.04 there is the free version of unrar. The package is called "unrar-free".
